Finn Jones

Chatting with Finn Jones over the phone, I’m immediately hit with the #feels from the last time I saw the actor on television. Rising to fame in his role as Ser Loras Tyrell in the emotional roller coaster that is Game of Thrones, the Londoner left the show after his spectacular, and untimely, death at the end of the last series. “It was a great way to go!” Jones tells me when I ask how it felt suffering the wrath of George RR Martin, “If you’re gonna go, you might as well get blown up in the finale!”

Having been on the show for six years, Jones came to a crossroads when the wildfire hit and decided to head Stateside, “I got a one way ticket to LA and just thought ‘Fuck it, let’s do this.’ I just left. I took my suitcase with me and travelled to LA in defiance that I was gonna get a job. I wasn’t gonna leave LA until I got a job,” he exclaims. Getting to the West Coast, his risk paid off and his first audition was for the lead role of Danny Rand in the Netflix adaptation of Marvel’s Iron Fist

Waiting for an agonising three weeks to hear back from the audition, Jones can’t hold in the laughter as he tells me how his first leading role was finally revealed. “One evening I was on Venice Beach with my buddy and I was talking myself out of the job. In my heart of hearts I really, really wanted it, and there was this perfect moment when — I kid you not — these fucking dolphins started jumping out of the sea as the sun was setting,” here’s where the chortles of disbelief begin. “My friend was like, ‘It’s a sign!’ Within 10 minutes my phone rings and it’s my agent like, ‘You got the job!’”

Starring as the eponymous Iron Fist, Jones is now reprising his role for Netflix’s upcoming miniseries The Defenders. Alongside fellow superheroes Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage, the show sees the Marvel heavyweights uniting to save New York. “It’s all the superheroes coming together to take on Sigourney Weaver,” he explains. “It’s a lot of fun. It’s all four of us just kicking ass!” Set for release in August, the show is guaranteed to be your next hangover Netflix binge and will mark the continued reign of Jones’ stardom. Who needs the Iron Throne?
